The Production has been going since March 2008 and the mod is currently well under development and boasts a variety of new features. 'Third Age - Total War' is a mod for Medieval II: Total War that brings you to the world of Middle-Earth.

If you've played Civ4, it's a bit like moving from 'normal' to 'epic' timescale.Medieval 2: Total War - Third Age Total War Mod v3.0 Part 1 It seems well balanced to me, but the slower pace can make it a bit too easy to 'steamroller' the AI with hordes of low-tech militia units and win the game before the really interesting techs become available.

The LTC mod also makes the game longer (fewer 'years' pass for each turn, but longer build times to compensate).

They are still powerful but need to be used in more of an infantry support role. The only criticism I've heard of LTC is that cavalry are further weakened (cav units are reduced in size). It's pretty much MTW2 as it should have been.īasicly, in LTC a unit will do exactly what it's statistics suggest it should do. "Lands to Conquer" is a great mod, because it balances the unit stats to a sensible level, sometimes using some of the hidden compensation factors to correct the 'slow' animations. Units with shields tend to totally own everything, while 2-handed units (both sword and axe types) are pathetic. So, when you play v1.2 (vanilla), all the unit stats are way out. So because of the shield bug, the sword-and-shield units were given godlike stats compared to 2-handed swordsmen. The problem is, the original v1.0 unit stats were set up to balance the bugs. The bugs are now fixed by the official patch (1.2, I think), although the 2-handed axe animation is 'slow', causing the 'actual' power of their attack to be much less than their stats suggest.
